Lobby group hopes Govt funding won't hurt rural projects

Posted October 15, 2008 14:11:00

A national regional lobby group says it hopes major regional infrastructure projects will not suffer because of the Federal Government's $10 billion injection into Australia's economy.

The money will go to groups including pensioners and first home-buyers.

The executive officer of Champions of the Bush Geoffrey Caruthers says such a short-term economic kick-start may have some upsides.

But that should not come at the expense of regional projects which need long lead times.

"What we've seen of course in our lifetime is that a lot of these government responses are very much short-term, they're within political parliamentary cycles," he said.

"I just hope that by having an immediate injection into the economy between now and christmas won't in any way jeopardise the investment in long-term infrastructure projects for regional australia."
