Cadell's new inmates 'not involved in Port Augusta riots'

Posted October 15, 2008 15:33:00

The Correctional Services Department says none of the 11 new inmates at the Cadell Training Centre were involved with the riots at the Port Augusta prison last week.

Spokesman Christian Thompson says the prisoners were moved to Cadell as part of the Department's relocation process to free up space in larger central prisons.

He says Cadell as a low security prison would not have been an appropriate place to send any of the high security prisoners involved in the riots.

"There's been some speculation that's been thrown about that prisoner classification has been downgraded to free up beds," he said.

"I'd just like to say that the department categorically rejects that that is happening.

"We would never downgrade prisoner security classification to free up a bed."
