Former Brisbane Lions triple premiership-winner Nigel Lappin has signed on as an assistant coach with AFL runners-up Geelong for 2009.

Lappin joins Ken Hinkley, Brendan McCartney and Brenton Sanderson on the coaching staff providing support to head coach Mark Thompson.

"The club has gone from strength to strength over the years and I seen playing against them how they have developed," Lappin said in a club statement.

"I have great respect for the way the club has gone about building its team and am excited to be joining them and working with the players and coaches."

Cats boss Neil Balme says he is thrilled at the prospect of Lappin joining forces with the 2007 premiers.

"Nigel's record speaks for itself and we are looking forward to his knowledge and teaching ability helping the club to continue to be strong," he said.
