Gallica wins Thousand Guineas

Posted October 15, 2008 17:00:00

Gallica took out the $500,000 Thousand Guineas race at Caulfield Racecourse today.

Cats Whisker placed second in the Group One race, while Glowlamp came third. Race favourite, Romneya, placed fourth.

Gallica's trainer Mick Price told TVN that he will not be entering the horse in the Oaks, despite this afternoon's win.

"I reckon I've used plenty of horse to get here and I'm not a big fan of 2,500 for these fillies at that time in their career, so look she's won a Group One and that's all we need to do," he said.

Gallica's jockey, Damien Oliver, said he always planned to lead for the entire race.

"I thought I might actually, I was a bit surprised to see Cats Whiskers take it up but we ended up taking a trail, we got a beautiful run and, though it was pretty moderate tempo mid-race, when I eased her out I thought it's going to take a good one to run her down because she quickened up really good," he said.
