People-smuggling 'still AFP priority'

Posted October 16, 2008 00:26:00

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) says it continues to work actively overseas to disrupt people smuggling operations.

In its annual report, the AFP says its officers in Jakarta have continued to work closely with Indonesian authorities to prevent several people smuggling ventures.

But it says the majority of its resources over the past financial year have gone into disrupting organised people smuggling operations from Sri Lanka.

It says there has been a significant increase in the number of Sri Lankans trying to enter Australia illegally.

The report says disrupting those activities has been the major focus of its people-smuggling strike team over the year.
