The Australian Manufacturing and Workers Union is urging the Federal Government to provide financial help for 130 workers in Ballarat who have lost their jobs.

Manufacturing company John Valves stood down its employees yesterday because of a multi million dollar debt.

The workers are owed a weeks pay.

The Australian Manufacturing and Workers Union State Secretary, Stephen Dargavel, is calling for government assistance.

"We don't accept that the Federal Government has its hands tied at all," Mr Dargavel said.

"It has plenty of capacity under federal law to provide some assistance", he said "they should do so".

Administrator, Stephen Dixon said will ask the Federal Court for an adjournment this afternoon.

"To allow me to investigate the affairs and see what I can do with obviously the company and see if I can't do something with it as a going concern," Mr Dixon said.
