Canberra rental prices softening: report

New figures indicate Canberra's tight rental market may be easing but rents remain among the highest in the country.

The latest report from Australian Property Monitors (APM) shows median rents fell by 2 per cent in the ACT in the September quarter.

On a year-to-year basis they rose by a moderate 3 per cent.

But Canberra's median weekly rent of $390 for houses was still among the highest in capital cities, topped only by Darwin.

Nationally, APM says the rental market appears to be softening, as falling interest rates take pressure of landlords to offset mortgage costs.

But it warns over the longer term serious problems with infrastructure investment will maintain upward pressure on rents.
