Russia-Georgia talks suspended

Talks on the Russian-Georgian conflict have been suspended in Geneva after just one morning of meetings.

It is understood the two sides did not even hold face-to-face discussions.

Three international organisations were co-chairing the talks to try and firm up peace in the Caucasus after the August conflict between Russia and Georgia.

Yet at the end of the day, organisers used diplomatic language, saying they had encountered procedural difficulties so meetings were suspended.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashivili was more blunt, asserting the Russians had walked out of the talks.

The foreign minister of the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia told reporters there had been separate meetings, with Russians and Abkhazians in one and Georgians in the other.

Russia's deputy foreign minister has indicated a second round of international discussions will be held next month.
