Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says holding a regional sitting of State Parliament once every three years is worth the expense.

Parliamentary staff are packing equipment, books and furniture to transport to Cairns for the session later this month.

More than 100 politicians and staff will spend the week in the far north Queensland city.

Ms Bligh says despite the economic climate, it is money well spent.

"It does cost a little bit more to take the whole Parliament to Cairns, but it's a very modest cost over a three-year period," she said.

"I think it is important to remember we're a very big state and democracy is important.

"There are many people around the world who die in pursuit of it and I think it is important, particularly for school children, to have a chance to see their Parliament."
