Police union backs 24hr pub ban

Posted October 16, 2008 09:00:00

The New South Wales Police Association has backed calls for a ban on 24-hour pubs and stronger regulations to curb alcohol-fuelled violence.

The association says there have been 1,500 assaults on police dealing with drunken patrons this year.

It also says there has been a rise in compensation claims and officers retiring for medical reasons.

The association's president, Bob Pritchard, says day-to-day operations are being affected.

"If police are assaulted they can't come back to work, therefore it lessens the number of police we can put out on the street," he said.

"The community expects a safe environment. If we can't put the police out there, we're not doing what we've committed to."
