Alice runner prepares for Masters Mile pain

Posted October 16, 2008 10:21:00

Alice Springs runner Eli Melky is set to take on two strong competitors in the Masters Games' premier event this afternoon.

Melky will compete against Victorian Tim Carrol and Steven Blake from Darwin in the Masters Mile at 5:00pm ACST.

Melky won the five kilometre event earlier in the week, but he says that has not calmed his nerves.

"I will ... focus down the road, it will be run as hard as I possibly can, ignore the pain in my feet, in my lungs, my legs ... my toes, no oxygen deprivation, all the rest of it," he said.

"It will be ignore, ignore, ignore and then someone will say you've finished because I will be too oblivious [to it] to know where I am. That's the mile - welcome to the madness of it."

Olympic champion Dawn Fraser will also compete in two team events today, the four-by-50 metre freestyle relay and the swimming leg of the triathalon.
