Tasmania's Opposition Leader Will Hodgman has apologised to Parliament for making an obscene hand gesture to a Government backbencher.

Mr Hogman directed the hand gesture at the Member for Braddon, Brenton Best, last night.

Will Hodgman sought leave to apologise as soon as Parliament sat this morning, that leave was granted but not before the Premier David Bartlett described the Opposition Leader's actions as "school boy behaviour" and inappropriate.

The Opposition's Deputy Leader, Jeremy Rockliff, hit back, saying Mr Hodgman tried to apologise directly to Mr Best last night.

Mr Rockliff told Parliament Mr Best refused to accept the apology, instead putting his fingers in his ears and saying "I'm not listening, I'm not listening".

Mr Best has given notice of a motion to have Mr Hodgman's actions referred to the Privileges Committee.
