Rent rises ease in capital cities

A national report suggests rental prices for houses are easing in many capital cities.

The Australian Property Monitors report for the September quarter says average weekly rents in Sydney and Hobart have increased by 2 per cent.

But there was no change in rents in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Darwin is the big mover, with average rents jumping $30 or 7 per cent since June.

In Canberra house rents dropped by about $10 a week.

The report says the recent reduction in interest rates means pressure on landlords to offset their mortgage costs has eased.

But it says problems with infrastructure investment and a slowing building sector will maintain upward pressure on rents in the long term.
