Three Rivers' last drinks cancelled

Posted October 29, 2008 09:29:00

The last drinks at one of far north Queensland's most infamous watering holes have been called off.

The Three Rivers canteen in the Cape York Aboriginal community of Aurukun was due to open for the last time today.

It only opens on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays to sell light beer, but it has been closed since extra police were called in to quell a brawl involving 150 people last week.

The council, police and Liquor Licensing have decided not to reopen it before the council has to surrender its liquor licence on Friday.

Police say the closure will help to prevent the family tensions that sparked last week's brawl from reigniting.

The council believes there is still a chance the canteen could reopen.

Tomorrow it will ask the Supreme Court in Cairns to review Liquor Licensing's decision not to extend its liquor licence until the end of the year.
