Port Stephens Council improves complaints rate

The number of complaints against the Port Stephens Council has dropped by more than 75 per cent.

In the 2006/2007 financial year, Port Stephens Council was one of the most complained about local governments in the state with 39 complaints.

In the latest report from the New South Wales Ombudsman, the number of grievances against Port Stephens has dropped to just nine.

Port Stephens' Mayor Bruce McKenzie says while the result is pleasing, a lot of work still needs to be done.

"Possibly some of the people that want to develop things and get things done don't complain to the Ombudsman, but they've been complaining to me for the last eight years when I haven't even been on the council," he said.

"But I'm very confident that want to do things and Port Stephens will get 100 per cent cooperation and better treatment than they've been getting in the past."

Across the Hunter, most councils also experienced a decrease in complaints during the 2007/2008 financial year.

Newcastle council received 14 complaints which is six less than the previous year.

Singleton and the Upper Hunter councils received just one each.

Lake Macquarie council received the most complaints of any council in the Hunter with 18, an increase of four from the previous financial year.
