Green power for Cape Barren

Posted November 6, 2008 19:45:00

A group of Aborigines on Cape Barren Island will soon have access to renewable energy.

The Federal Government is contributing more than $1 million to help install two 20-kilowatt wind turbines and solar panels capable of generating three kilowatts of power.

It's part of the Commonwealth's Renewable Power Generation Program which is delivering electricity to remote areas.

The Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett says on Cape Barren it will give 30 homes 24-hour access to power.

"The fact that we've got some 76 megawatts of electricity each year that can be generated by the solar panels and wind turbines plus the back up of a new efficient diesel generator gives these communities the opportunity to be able to have access to power but it's power that in the main will be produced by the energy of the sun or the energy of the wind," he said.
