Teachers to vote on latest pay offer

Posted November 11, 2008 16:00:00

The NT Education Union says a new pay deal may be brokered with the Northern Territory Government by the end of the year.

The Government offered a revised deal at the end of last month, and the Territory branch of the Australian Education Union will hold a vote on the offer this week.

The offer includes a 12 per cent pay rise over three years, plus an extra one hour of non-contact per week for primary school teachers.

Union spokesman, Adam Lampe says the union is not recommending a position to its members for the ballot.

"We'll have a look at the numbers and we'll be able to tell the government whether this has been endorsed. I'd say we'll definitely know a decision by the end of next week," he said.

Mr Lampe says there is an incentive for some teachers to accept the offer before the end of the year.

"Those people retiring or resigning or not having their contracts renewed next year will miss out on the back pay, so it gives a substantial group of people a reason to vote for this offer."

The union says the result should be known by the end of next week.

If the offer is accepted the long running dispute could be over before Christmas.
