Tamworth grain farmers watching the skies

Tamworth grain farmers are keeping a close watch on the rain forecast, with fears it may impact on their returns, particularly in northern parts of the region.

Forecasters are predicting large falls in a rain event that will take several days to pass through the region, in north-west New South Wales.

Grain seller Wal Bruin says farmers on the Liverpool Plains will generally have two or three weeks before serious concerns arise, but those in the Moree and Narrabri areas could be affected.

"It's not the first fall, it's the second or third fall that happens over a sustained period," he said.

"We're at the second major rain event during harvest. If this one's prolonged, over three or four days, it's a pretty likely scenario there's going to be some feed wheat out there."

There have been falls of about 30 millimetres in parts of the region.
