Jacobs to review anti-smoking policy

Posted November 21, 2008 12:09:00

The Western Australian Minister for Mental Health says programs to quit smoking should be introduced as part of patient treatment when it is appropriate.

Graham Jacobs says staff at the Kalgoorlie mental health unit have raised concerns over the current smoking ban for new patients.

They say it prevents effective treatment because patients are put under extra stress.

Dr Jacobs says he will review the anti-smoking policy across the state.

"I think it's probably adding, at not the appropriate time in a person's illness, to be saying, 'well you've got to stop smoking as well as all these other things that are happening in your life'," he said.
