Police are warning people to stay away from an 80-year-old man they are looking for after a shooting in inner Sydney.

Police were called to a unit in Belvoir Street at Surry Hills just after 7:00pm AEDT last night where they found a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the lower stomach.

The man was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he had surgery.

He is now in a stable condition.

Officers say they are searching for an 80-year-old man with a large build.

The man is known to police and is reported to have a tattoo of a sailing ship on one forearm and a heart and dagger tattoo on the other.

Police say the man may be armed with a handgun, and have urged people not to approach him.
