Race dates delay affecting jockey club income

Posted November 24, 2008 10:20:00

The Newcastle Jockey Club (NJC) says delays in finalising race dates for next year and 2010 are starting to affect the club's ability to generate income as a functions venue.

The New South Wales Government is under fire for not appointing a new board to Racing New South Wales, which is yet to confirm race dates after the middle of next year.

The chief executive of the NJC, John Curtis, says for people wanting to book functions such as weddings on non-race days, the club is simply having to turn business away.

"Race clubs these days can't rely on being a race club, it's still our core business obviously, but we must look at non-wagering income, and to promote non-race day functions you really have to know dates, so the sooner dates are set for 2009/'10 the better," he said.
