Questions raised over no boat ramp for marina project

Posted November 26, 2008 12:18:00

The recreational fishers' group, Sunfish, says it cannot understand why a proposed marina project in the Whitsundays does not include a new boat ramp.

Public comment is currently being sought on the Shute Harbour Marina Project, which includes 660 berths and a commercial precinct.

Sunfish Mackay says the development should also include a three-lane boat ramp and parking facilities.

President Lance Murray says time is running out for people to have their say, with the environmental impact statement closing in two weeks.

"What's there is proposed in black and white, what the developers obligations are," he said.

"If they get the green light on that and people don't jump and yell and scream like we're trying to yell and scream and have something done about it, well we're just going to have to live with the decision."

Shute Haven project manager Dave Quinlan says a public boat ramp is not something they should pay the full cost for.

"The thing to realise of course is, by definition, it's a public boat ramp and is not owned by us. Because it's not owned by us, we can only contribute financially to it," he said.
