Construction of a solar power station in Alice Springs will begin in February next year.

The 26 dish power station will be constructed south of Alice Springs and will be one of the largest stations in Australia.

It is expected to generate more than 1,800 megawatt hours of clean energy for the region each year, which will mean a 1,300 tonne reduction in national greenhouse gas emissions.

The project wwill be built by a Melbourne firm and has a budget of $6.6 million, half of which will be funded by the Federal Government as part of the Alice Solar City Initiative.

The Illparpa Solar Power Station, as it's called, is expected to start feeding power into the grid by early 2010.
