Forum highlights south-west road worries

Posted November 26, 2008 13:26:00

South-west Victoria's community and business leaders say the region's roads will not stand up to the expected increase in freight traffic.

The State Government held a forum in Warrnambool yesterday with local council heads and industry representatives.

The Glenelg council chief executive officer, Stuart Burdack, says forum attendees made it clear that some of the region's major roads are in a bad way.

He says that is particularly worrying because of the impending blue gum harvest.

"We identified that there is an urgent need to upgrade major highways, particularly the Princes Highway west through to Mount Gambier, simply because of the increased freight haulage that's going to take place on those roads in the very near future, together with the increased numbers of tourists that are using those roads," he said.
