Port Augusta pushes ahead with dog patrols trial

Posted November 26, 2008 13:47:00

The Mayor of Port Augusta, Joy Baluch, has reaffirmed the council's commitment to dog security patrols over summer.

The council gave the patrols the final approval this week.

They will coincide with Aboriginal families travelling down from the APY Lands in the far north over the school break, and have been labelled racist.

Councillor Baluch says the patrols are only a three month trial to see whether there will be a reduction in vandalism and other crime.

"I'm quite offended by comments from outside of our city. When I have tried to introduce actions such as dry areas, I've been labelled a racist and I really don't care what comments are made by any person, we intend to undertake this trial," she said.
