Lack of Burringarrah crisis awareness puzzles MP

Posted November 26, 2008 14:14:00

The Member for the North West, Vince Catania, says he is disappointed at the time it has taken for Government agencies to realise there were major problems at the Burringarrah Aboriginal community.

On Tuesday, the Federal Government sent a plane with half a tonne of food to Burringarrah, east of Carnarvon, after the community's store closed because of financial difficulties.

Mr Catania says it is hard to believe authorities were unaware of the problems before the situation escalated.

"I think that ... the Federal Government and also state agencies have to have a look at the community and have a look at where it's gone wrong to get to this point and rectify those issues that may exist for the community, getting to the point where it's got limited food and fuel to be able to go get the food," he said.
