Bairnsdale health service bans smoking

Posted November 26, 2008 15:00:00

Smoking has been banned on all campuses of the Bairnsdale Regional Health Service.

The ban applies to the buildings, grounds, and staff and visitor car parks.

The service's chief executive officer, Wayne Sullivan, says the organisation has an obligation to provide a safe and healthy environment.

He says a number of staff have indicated the ban will encourage them to quit.

"Overwhelmingly the feedback is positive - staff have come on board because a number of staff in any organisation smoke, so there is always an issue from that perspective," he said.

"From a patient's perspective there's issues, but generally it's well accepted."
