The South Australian Government says population changes are behind a plan to close two schools and merge others.

Morphett Vale High School and Sedan Primary School are to close and six primary and junior primary schools at Parafield Gardens, Aberfoyle Park and Wynn Vale face mergers.

SA Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says school councils agreed with the closure plans.

"The decision to close their schools was a difficult one for the parents but they're to be applauded for putting students' interests first," the Minister said.

She says an early learning centre at Melrose will also close.

Opposition education spokesman David Pisoni believes the schools had to close or lose resources anyway.

"It's very easy to make a decision you know the Government wants when the alternative is a death by 1,000 cuts," he said.
