The parents of Melbourne backpacker Britt Lapthorne have been told they may never know exactly how their daughter died.

The Victorian coroner's office has issued a statement, saying examinations of the 21-year-old's body were completed yesterday, and the release of the remains to her family has been authorised.

The statement also says the coroner expects to receive a pathologist's report in the next two to three weeks and there are hopes it will provide some more information for the Lapthorne family.

But the statement says it may never be possible to pinpoint an exact cause of death.

Britt Lapthorne's body was discovered in the waters off Dubrovnik in early October, three weeks after she disappeared from a local nightclub.
