Two mine workers hurt in explosion

Posted November 27, 2008 08:11:00

Two men are being treated for flash burns after an explosion at BHP Billiton's coal mine in Sydney's south-west yesterday afternoon.

Police say the men were trying to repair a transformer at the site on Appin Road just before 5:30pm (AEDT).

Chief Inspector Brian Doyle says the transformer exploded when it was turned on.

"One of the electricians turned on the transformer, it malfunctioned and exploded," he said.

"Unfortunately both men were injured by flash burns. The 26-year-old man received burns to his arms, his chest, his face and his throat, while his colleague suffered to his arms."

They were treated on-site before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Eight miners were removed from the shaft about 8:00pm, assessed and offered counselling.

The mine has been closed and Department of Primary Industry officers are now investigating.
