Salvos bring Christmas to the outback

Posted November 27, 2008 09:38:00

Hundreds of presents and children's toys will be flown into outback Queensland communities and remote sheep and cattle stations over the next month, in time for Christmas.

The Salvation Army's Outback Flying Service will distribute the gifts over an area spanning 800,000 square kilometres of the state, from the Gulf country to Birdsville.

Spokesman Simon Steele says he expects the presents will be gratefully received.

"The families are doing it quite tough, I guess because of the drought and the way things are these days," he said.

"It's really caused families to really focus on surviving and I guess that takes the focus off things like when Christmas comes up, so the gifts are very appreciated by the children and the parents too."
