Council seeks answers about support for relocated families

Posted November 27, 2008 11:29:00

Concerns have been raised about the level of support given to families moved to Cowra by government departments.

The Cowra council has written to the New South Wales Government asking for its "policy on relocating disadvantaged families from troubled areas".

It is also seeking details about the level of support and assistance given to the families, to ensure they integrate into their new neighbourhood.

A Cowra Shire councillor, Peter Wright, says current programs are inadequate and some families have had trouble adjusting.

"They've been moved here and proper programs have not been put in place to see them move into the work force or into the community at large," he said.

"They're moving from one community they've been used to into a strange community and it's taking longer than expected to assimilate.

"If people are being relocated under programs, the programs have got to follow them right through to make sure they assimilate into the community in a proper fashion and not left to their own devices, where they feel that they're not being properly provided for."

However, in a statement, the Department of Housing says no public housing tenants have been relocated to Cowra recently.
