Portland smelter to cut jobs

Posted November 27, 2008 11:31:00

The Portland aluminium smelter will cut production and contractor jobs from next week.

The smelter's operator, Alcoa, says it will shed up to 20 contractor positions and production will be reduced by 15,000 tonnes a year, representing a 5 per cent cut.

Alcoa says the cuts are needed because the industry is in surplus and the aluminium price has fallen sharply.
