Wings awarded to HMAS Albatross graduates

Posted November 27, 2008 13:12:00

Four HMAS Albatross Aircrewman graduates will get their wings today at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in South Nowra.

Able Seaman Robert Walgers, Leading Seaman James Inglish, Able Seaman Richard John Close and Leading Seaman Carly Mercer have each completed 12 months of rigorous training.

The dux of the course will also be announced today.

Leading Seaman Carly Mercer is one of only seven women to graduate the course in Australia, and says the training has been rigorous and challenging.

"We do things like combat survival, where we go up to Townsville and learn to escape from different situations in downed aircraft," she said.

"We do aviation medicine and of course we do lots of ground school before we start flying, so flying is a whole new concept to everyone on the course - so it's a whole new challenge to everyone."
