Council seeks smoking policy feedback

Moves are underway by the City of Geraldton Greenough to ban smoking in alfresco dining areas and other council owned public places.

On Tuesday, the council voted to release its draft policy on the proposal which would see smoking banned at patrolled beaches, sporting venues and playgrounds within the city.

If adopted, a 12-month trial with an emphasis on education rather than enforcement will apply, before the council drafts new laws.

The city's chief executive, Tony Brun, says the council hopes the public comment period will allow the community to voice concerns.

"Oh we've had some people raise their concerns that they feel it's a restriction on rights and they're the things we'd like to hear from the community. Whether they like the proposal, whether they don't like it, you know we really need to hear that feedback," he said.
