Health survey reveals miner weight woes

Posted November 27, 2008 15:00:00

The state Health Minister says he is concerned about the waistlines of north Queensland miners.

A recent health survey has found 76 per cent of mine workers are overweight or obese, compared to the national average of 53 per cent.

Queensland Health is currently reviewing a pilot program, which was run at Moranbah, Nebo, Dysart and Coppabella to encourage healthier eating patterns.

Stephen Robertson has told State Parliament the statistics are worrying.

"While we all enjoy the benefit of the resources boom, we should remember one thing, that is the safety and health of miners comes first," he said.

"We know a number of factors such as food supply, living arrangements, housework and limited opportunity to undertake physical activity means many miners aren't as healthy or fit as they should be."
