Community votes to close 100yr-old school

Posted November 27, 2008 15:18:00

One of Eyre Peninsula's oldest schools is about to close at the request of its local community.

Wharminda Primary has been operating for about 100 years.

Principal Craig Akehurst says with enrolments down to just 15 students the school will close at the end of the year.

"Our predicted enrolments over the next few years were going to drop significantly so the community have been really courageous in deciding it was a time for closure," he said.

The 15-pupil Sedan Primary School in the Mallee is also closing at the end of the year.

Parents voted last week to have the school closed.
