Asbestos found around Collinsville Hospital

Posted November 27, 2008 15:38:00

The State Government has confirmed asbestos has been found around the Collinsville Hospital in north Queensland.

Health Minister Stephen Robertson says there is low risk asbestos in cement wall sheeting, and some has also been found in off-site soil samples.

He says it is believed to be related to demolition work from many years ago, and not recent construction work.

Mr Robertson has told Parliament that Queensland Health has engaged environmental consultants to investigate.

"Their occupational health and safety consultant has advised that, based on the current test results and information from the contractor and the distance of the new building from the area of confirmed asbestos, there is negligible risk to staff and patients at the hospital," he said.
