A man accused of the murder of underworld figure Victor Peirce has been committed to stand trial.

Victor Peirce's daughter cried as Vince Benvenuto was ordered to stand trial for his murder.

It is alleged 55-year-old Benvenuto lured Peirce to Port Melbourne in 2002, where he was fatally shot by hitman Andrew Veniamin.

Magistrate Carmen Randazzo said there were only two pieces of evidence that should be considered by a jury; a secretly recorded conversation involving the accused and a statement made by a protected witness on the first day of the committal hearing.

Outside the Melbourne Magistrates Court Victor Peirce's widow Wendy Peirce thanked the Purana taskforce for its work.

Benvenuto will return to court next month.
