Food festival promotes healthy eating

Posted November 28, 2008 09:47:00

The manager of the Engawala Store, 170 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs, says a fruit and vegetable extravaganza held at the store on Thursday was a great success and will be repeated throughout the coming year.

Maz Lewis says the healthy food festival has already had a positive effect on adults and children in the remote Indigenous community.

Ms Lewis says it is important for the community of about 200 people to enjoy healthy eating.

She says the store organised a nutritionist to help prepare the big day, which included a visit from the 'vegie man'.

"Paul's my partner and he actually drew the short straw. He had to dress up as vegie man, so he's like a big ... Humphrey Bear, but all vegetables ... I think it's 40 degrees and paul was dressed up with all this foam and rubber and the mask and he was running around out there," she said.
