Bike ride to boost western Vic traders

Posted November 28, 2008 10:47:00

The Great Victorian Bike Ride is expected to bring about $1 million to businesses in western Victoria.

This year's ride begins at Ballarat tomorrow and will travel through Lake Bolac, Halls Gap, Dunkeld and Mortlake.

The ride director, Sarah Greenwood-Smith, says more than 4,000 cyclists will take part in the nine-day event.

She says, on average, cyclists spend about $40 in each town they stay in, which adds up across the tour.

"It obviously depends on the town and how much the communities got involved in the event, how close the campsite is to town and all of that sort of thing," she said.

"But from the planning that we've been doing and the feedback that we've had from the community groups, I have no doubt that the communities along the way are really going to see a great economic benefit from this year's ride."
