ABC centres must be assessed for more than economic value: union

Posted November 28, 2008 12:04:00

The union representing child care workers says the centres under threat in the Illawarra need to be assessed for more than their economic value.

ABC Learning is currently under administration, with four centres in the Shoalhaven, and one each at Corrimal, Shellharbour, Thirlmere and Goulburn under review.

Rebecca Riley from the child care union says until an announcement is made next week on which centres will remain open, the issue will continue to cause a great deal of anxiety for parents and child care workers.

Ms Riley says the wider implications of any closures need to be considered.

"We're ... saying that we believe that child care is actually an essential service, so we actually need to have a look at [it] to make sure the workers, those professionals have ongoing employment, but particularly to have certainty for the families that rely on that child care," she said.
