Spirit, Dragons match to go ahead

Posted November 28, 2008 13:18:00

The National Basketball League (NBL) says tomorrow's game between the embattled Sydney Spirit and the South Dragons will go ahead as scheduled.

Sydney Spirit players agreed to a financial rescue package put forward by Basketball Australia (BA) this morning.

The players have not been paid for the last month and the club's owner has been issued with a default notice.

NBL chief executive Scott Derwin says the club's players have had a major role in keeping the Spirit going.

"At the end of the day it was the decision of the players. We put a rescue package to them which entailed them having to accept a very substantial reduction in their salaries," he said.

"To their great credit they accepted that and which will allow the game to proceed tomorrow."
