Australian actress Brooke Satchwell and her film editor boyfriend David Gross are safely out of Mumbai on a flight to Singapore, her representative has confirmed.

The couple were in the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai when it was stormed by armed Islamic militants on Wednesday evening local time.

Separated from her boyfriend, Satchwell hid in a cupboard in a toilet on the ground floor for up to an hour before staff led her out of the hotel.

She said she had to step over dead bodies as she left the burning hotel.

Later, Satchwell made her way back inside the hotel to retrieve her passport and phone charger before heading to the airport.

"From what I know, yes [she is one of the few Australians to leave] ... But I haven't been told a lot," her agent Sarah Linsten said.

"She was one of the few [to get out of the country] - I don't know how that happened, I don't know how they got out."

Ms Linsten said Satchwell and Gross had not been able to get through to the Australian Consulate all Thursday evening and the main source of their information came from US and British authorities.

The Federal Government's performance at helping Australians caught up in the drama was a "sore topic", Gross told the Nine Network earlier today.
