Brumby issues asbestos apology

Posted November 28, 2008 14:29:00

Victorian Premier John Brumby has apologised to asbestos victims and their families in Morwell.

Mr Brumby has said sorry at a ceremony at the Centenary Rose Garden, also attended by power company executives and union representatives.

Thousands of SEC power workers were exposed to asbestos in the valley between the 1920s and 1980s, many of them developing the fatal mesothelioma.

The secretary of the Gippsland Asbestos Related Diseases Support Group, Vicky Hamilton, says many have turned out for today's apology.

"It's a really significant thing, it acknowledges the sacrifices and the contribution that the power workers and their families made to the Latrobe Valley and I think that that is a worthwhile thing, they are all heroes as far as I'm concerned and I think it's time they were acknowledged for the great contribution they did make," she said.
