Fishers to remove Lake Bonney carp

Posted November 28, 2008 15:09:00

The Natural Resources Management Board is keen to make the most of an opportunity to get rid of a large number of carp from Lake Bonney at Barmera in the Riverland.

The lake is getting fresh water inflows for the first time in nearly a year.

This week, 18 pipes were installed at Lake Bonney to siphon water over from the adjacent Chambers Creek.

The South Australian Government has secured a 10 gigalitre water allocation to stop the lake getting too salty over summer.

When the water started flowing, thousands of carp flocked to the source of the fresh water.

Many carp are trapped between the siphon pipes and Judy Goode from the Natural Resource Management Board says it is eager to make the most of it.

"It provides a fantastic opportunity if we can get some commercial fishers in there to remove the carp," she said.

The fishermen are expected to arrive this afternoon.
