Taxi fares in Western Australia are set to increase by more than two per cent from Monday.

The Transport Minister, Simon O'Brien, says a review of operating costs including fuel and maintenance led to the increase.

Passengers will pay about three cents more per kilometre or an extra 40 cents for an average trip of seven and a half kilometres.

Mr O'Brien says the $1.50 call out surcharge on Friday and Saturday nights will also automatically be placed on the meter.

Fare evasion penalties have been boosted from $100 to $250.
