The Weather Bureau says severe thunderstorms are lashing areas west of Queensland's Gold Coast.

A severe weather warning has been issued for Brisbane, the Scenic Rim, the Gold Coast, the Lockyer Valley, Ipswich and Toowoomba areas.

Brisbane residents are now being warned to prepared for a severe storm coming in from the West.

Forecaster David Grant says damaging winds and large hailstones have already hit areas north-west of Warwick.

He says the storms are moving east and will reach the Gold Coast by mid-afternoon.

"Boonah and out west of Ipswich and the Amberley region can expect damaging winds and some large hail to come out of this, this system," he said.

"We've already had 111 kilometres per hour wind gusts reported up around Mt Alfred, so we can expect these systems to move eastwards."
