Storm warnings cancelled, Qld spared battering

Posted November 29, 2008 19:02:00

Severe storm warnings for south-east Queensland have been cancelled.

High winds and lightning hit areas from Oakey in the state's south-west to Brisbane as a line of thunderstorms moved quickly towards the coast this afternoon.

Brian Rolston from the Weather Bureau says the storms did not produce much rain, but high winds were widespread and hit Brisbane's south hard.

"Archerfield reported up to 100 kilometres an hour wind gusts," he said.

Energex crews are working to restore electricity to about 10,000 homes and businesses after debris was blown into power lines.

About 6,000 customers are still without electricity.

Early this morning, localised flooding claimed the life of a man near the New South Wales-Queensland border.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was swept away when he tried to cross the Severn River in the Sundown National Park.
