Passengers relieved after surviving bus storm ordeal

Posted December 1, 2008 09:37:00

Passengers say they were relieved and thankful for their driver's efforts after a wild storm in central western Queensland on Friday afternoon blew a bus off the road.

The Greyhound bus, travelling from Mt Isa to Charleville, had almost reached Longreach when a strong gust of wind blew it sideways.

Passenger George Turner says the storm changed direction suddenly causing the bus to slide, but he says the driver was able to ensure the safety of passengers.

"The storm was sort of travelling with us and you could see it was a fairly wild storm," he said.

"All of a sudden the storm changed directions, came straight across us with the wind and the rain and it just took the whole bus sideways, it was that severe, and just pushed the bus straight off the road.

"I think we're very lucky we had an experienced driver on board."
